CBD Oil Dosage: Here’s Some General Advice on How Much CBD to Take

Now that we know what CBD is and what are its benefits, given that the industry and product lines are relatively new, understanding how to use CBD and how much to use can be somewhat confusing.

One question we get a lot from our customers is:

What’s the best CBD dosage?

This being the case, it seems due to little information out there, no one really knows about the right dosages to take.

Hemp oil rich in CBD comes in various forms. There’s the liquid hemp oil, oil in capsules, oil as a thick paste, sublingual tincture drops, edibles in candy, salves for topical use and CBD vapour.

No size fits all

The FDA or anyone really in the medical field has not created any sort of Recommended Daily Intake guide for CBD product.

With this, users are more than often blindly estimating what their use should be at based on their friend’s or family’s usage, or from those from the manufacturers or companies who sell the products.

Below is a guide that acts as a point of reference for anyone who uses CBD oil. However, it’s important to note that every person is different and reacts differently to CBD dosages. Because of this, the best practice is to start with small doses before you gradually increase the dosage to get the desired results.

Different CBD brands have confusing dosages

Different CBD oil brands have different standards and dosages. This creates lots of confusion for consumers. While some brands recommend high doses of CBD, others tell users to take just a small dose.

Seeing the confusion in the industry, CBDOilReview designed the COR serving standard to simplify matters.

They recommend that consumers take 25 mg of CBD twice a day. The COR advises users to gradually increase their dosage after every three to four weeks until their symptoms disappear. In case the symptoms persist, it’s always advisable to decrease the dosage.

CBD Oil Dosage

A very common dosage provided by a number of people out there is “one dropper of CBD per day”.

CBD oil concentration ranges between 1 mg to 100’s of mgs per dose. This range gives consumers an easy time as they try to get the right dosages in a form they prefer to use.

While the dosage above could be a fine dose for many users, there are several factors to take into consideration before deciding your daily dosage:

  • The concentration of the CBD
  • Your body weight
  • Your body’s chemistry
  • The severity of the condition being treated
  • Your overall tolerance to CBD

With that being said, there’s clearly no one-size-fits-all approach to dosing CBD.

A neuroscientist from Leafly has once said that as our body’s physiology changes, so do the receptors in our endocannabinoid system, which are directly responsible for interactions with CBD.

So clearly, your dosage of CBD can change over time depending on your current tolerance for CBD.

So, how much CBD oil to take?

CBD dosage chart

  1. Estimate your dosage based on your bodyweight
    • As with other substances, your bodyweight will affect your tolerance for CBD and its effects. Above is a guide your dosage based on your bodyweight and the severity of the condition being treated.
  2. Increase your dosage gradually
    • It is a smart choice to start small and increase your dosage gradually. Since we are all different in our own ways, it’s maybe not the best choice to dose your CBD based on someone else’s dosage. Use the chart above and be conservative. From there, you can review your results and increase from there.
  3. Consult your physician
    • As you’ll hear often, when in doubt or if you have an existing medical condition, please consult your physician for more information.

Dosages from physicians on certain conditions

We researched the web for different physicians’ opinions on CBD dosages for different conditions.

Again, as noted above, please consult your physician if you plan to use CBD and you have an existing medical condition.

See below for recommendations found across the web:

For Cancer patients seeking to increase their appetite, 2.5 mg of CBD taken through the mouth seems to do the trick. For best results, they could add 1mg of CBD in the dosage and take it for six weeks.

2.5-20 Mg CBD taken through the mouth is the correct dosage to treat chronic pain. The dose should be taken for about 25 days.

For epilepsy patients, they should take 200-300 mg of CBD daily through the mouth.

Movement complications associated with Huntington’s disease are treated using 10mg per kilogramme of CBD. It should be taken daily for six weeks.

For Multiple Sclerosis, use Cannabis extracts with 2.5 – 120 mg of both CBD and THC. Take the dosage by mouth daily for 2-15 weeks.

If you opt for a mouth spray, make sure it has 2.7 mg of THC and a further 2.5 mg of CBD. The dose of between 2.5-120 mg should be taken for about 8 weeks.

Using this formula, patients use 8 mouth sprays every three hours and a total of 48 sprays in 24 hours. Treating Schizophrenia needs between 40 and 1280 mg if it’s taken through the mouth.

For Glaucoma, place a single dose of CBD of between 20-40 mg under your tongue. Anything above 40 mg could increase your eye pressure.

According to CannLabs, there’s no known lethal dosage for CBD. CannLabs is a leading testing lab for Marijuana products.

How to dose using a CBD oil tincture

How many drops of CBD oil should you take?

Using a dropper is an easy and efficient way to administer CBD so we need to find out how much CBD is actually in a single drop.

Knowing this, you can figure out how much CBD you’re taking and revise your regular dosage from thereon.

How much CBD is in a dropper?

Typically a dropper holds 1 ML of liquid.

If you know how many millilitres are in a CBD tincture, you can use this simple formula to determine how much CBD is in its dropper:

[Total CBD in Bottle] ÷ [Number of Millileters in Bottle] = MGs of CBD in a Dropper

For example, let’s say you purchased our 30ml CBD tincture that has 1000MG of CBD:

1000 ÷ 30 = Approx. 33.3 MG of CBD per dropper.

Let’s say your desired dosage is 15mg, then you would fill your dropper just under halfway.

Please note, this method isn’t 100% accurate, but it is more accurate than not measuring at all. Remember, start with a small dosage and gradually increase until you find your perfect dosage.

The Accurate Way to Dose CBD

Without understanding how to properly measure your dosage, knowing how much CBD you should take is pretty much pointless. Especially when it comes to all the different ways to consume CBD.
