Ontario passes the Marijuana Act
Ontario has officially passed the Marijuana Act, with the Liberals and NDP voting 63 to 27 in favour of the legislation, as the Conservatives opposed the bill.
The new law gives the Ontarian government a monopoly over the legal marijuana market in Ontario.
Who and where
Legal weed in Ontario will only be sold by the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation, a subsidiary of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, otherwise known as the LCBO.
Starting when marijuana is legal in Canada in July 2018, the LCBO will first operate 40 of its own retail outlets in the following municipalities:
- Toronto
- Mississauga
- Brampton
- Hamilton
- Vaughan
- Barrie
- Kingston
- Kitchener
- London
- Ottawa
- Sault Ste. Marie
- Sudbury
- Thunder Bay
- Windsor
Illegal weed dispensaries will be forced to close in Ontario, with cash fines up to $1 Million being threatened to those who continue to operate when weed is legalized for recreational use.
Online sales will also be controlled by the LCBO as well.
Use of marijuana in Ontario will be prohibited in public spaces and will only be permitted for use in private homes.
Ontarians will be permitted to grow their own personal cannabis at home, with a limit up to 4 plants.
How revenues from taxes will be split
It was previously announced that the federal government will be providing 75% of the annual tax revenues to the provinces and territories.
Now begins the work to see how the tax revenues from recreational Marijuana sales will be split with the municipalities.
