According to research, CBD has been confirmed to be an effective pain management solution. Indeed, one study found that more than 40% of children who had an uncommon disorder responded well to CBD and experienced 50% fewer seizures. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May, also confirmed that CBD lessened the number of seizures experienced by children with epilepsy.
The study, which was sponsored by GW Pharmaceuticals, is seen as the first rigorous studies to prove that CBD can, in reality, lessen seizures.
Cannabidiol is the non-psychoactive element of the cannabis plant and doesn’t give you a high. Over time, it’s been used by most parents to treat children with epilepsy disorders.
In this particular study, 120 children aged between 2 and 18 and all with Dravets syndrome, were divided into two groups. The first group was given a placebo while the other group got a dose of cannabidiol. The study lasted for 14 weeks. Dravets syndrome is a genetic disease that is characterized by prolonged seizures. The group that was administered with CBD reported experiencing up to 505 fewer seizures, while that on placebo had their number of seizures reduced by 5%.
According to Orrin Devinsky, a neurologist based in New York University’s Langone Medical Center, scientists now believe they have solid scientific evidence that CBD actually does reduce seizures in people with Dravets syndrome.
However, he was quick to add that CBD was not a panacea as it worked better in some people than in others. CBD treatment also comes with its fair share of side effects, including fever, diarrhea, sleepiness, and abnormal liver function, says the study.
